Cantine Lonardo/Contrade di Taurasi

Campania, Italy | website

Founded in 1998, this tiny producer of Aglianico and Grecomus’ from 100 year old vines, is fast becoming the talk of the town for their amazingly concentrated and elegant wines. It was really 2007 when they came into their own with a series of outstanding and age worthy Taurasi and since then, they have gone from strength to strength. Also known as Cantine Lonardo for the family that owns the vineyards and cellar just outside the town of Taurasi, this is one of the area’s most outstanding producers, making their Taurasi in an ultra-traditional style, maturing the wines in large casks. Farming only 5 ha in the region of Taurasi, the Lonardo family strives to work organically, fermenting their wines in old wood and sometimes only with indigenous yeasts.

"The 2007 Taurasi is a gorgeous, round Taurasi with impeccable class and elegance. Ripe dark fruit, smoke, minerals and ash flow from this graceful, elegant wine. The Taurasi here can at times be a touch rustic, but not in this vintage. The 2007 impresses for its sensual personality and harmony. It is a brilliant effort that makes me look forward to the Riserva with great anticipation. The Taurasi saw 30 days of contact on the skins and was subsequently aged for 18 months in 500-liter French oak barrels. The wine was bottled unfiltered and unfined."

"Deep ruby. Spicy aromas of red berries, minerals and cocoa. Bright, fresh and suave, with precise flavors of red cherry and tobacco complicated by licorice and sweet spices. The finish is bright, juicy and long but increasingly austere. Another outstanding wine from the Lonardo family."

"Dark ruby-red. Pure aromas of red cherry and rose petal, plus a whiff of alcohol on the enticing, aromatic nose. Big, dense and juicy, but with lively acidity providing lift and nicely extending the bright, sweet red cherry and peppery raspberry flavors on the long, suave finish. This strikes me as having been made with extremely ripe grapes but it's neither cooked nor over the top. A knockout entry-level Aglianico."
