Domaine Remi Jobard

Burgundy, France | website

Remi Jobard, son of Charles Jobard, and brother of François, has made many changes since taking over for his father in 1996, each change another small step to the top of the quality tree. There has been no use of fertiliser since 1994, and the entire domaine is certified organic from 2008. There are two large new presses, to enable him to press very slowly over six hours, and this has resulted in a big jump in finesse. The élevage now lasts nearly fifteen months, so as to allow the wines to develop slowly and to avoid fining. As a result these are wines which take a moment to show, but which reward the patient with complexity and great depth of flavour. One of the absolutely top domaines of the Côte de Beaune, and still at prices that are well, well below his qualitative equivalents.

The three Premier Crus are exceptional for their expressiveness, as well as their weight and character. The premier cru Les Poruzots-Dessus adjoins Genevrieres-Dessus and Remi produces a lush, opulent wine from here. More mineral, but just as powerful, is the wine made from very old vines in Genevrieres, regarded as one of the top vineyards in Meursault. Concentrated and spicy, this cuvee is of grand cru caliber.

He also makes four sensational and unique single vineyard village Meursaults from different lieu dits: the Sous la Velle is rich, plump, and long with lovely balance; the En Luraule (a parcel which adjoins 1er Cru Goutte D’Or and resembles that Cru) - very rich and golden buttery (thus Goutte D’Or) - while the Les Chevaliers from 55+ year old vines is very elegant, refined, structured, firm, and complex, benefiting from extra time in bottle, Les Narvaux also produces a wine who’s character is more in line with Premier Crus. than village Meursault.

While best known for his Meursault, there also some wonderful red wines bottled by the domaine from Meursault’s neighbor to the north, Monthelie. Les Vignes Rondes, one of the better premier cru sites in the village, produces a medium bodied, fragrant wine that offers fine value. Vines are also located in Sur la Velle and Les Champs-Fulliot, both of which touch the Volnay premier cru Clos des Chenes. The wines from these vineyards are very attractive, showing red currant and strawberry fruit. These cuvees illustrate Remi’s skill at making both white and red wines. He does the longest fermentation in Meursault (2 months long), and to enhance the mineral character over sweetness or bitterness, Remi ages all his wines in tight-grained 1200L Stockinger barrels from Austria, keeping new oak to a minimum. He now bottles all of his wines without filtration sixteen months after vintage to capture all of the texture and nuance. Ambitious and talented, Remi Jobard is a winemaker with a bright future.
