Elio Altare

Piedmont, Italy | website

One of the great legendary winemakers of Piemonte, Altare wines, especially their Barolo, are some of the purest expressions of terroir, power and finesse. Amongst the original modernist pioneers of the Langhe, Elio Altare forged a unique style, combining classic Barolo with shorter maceration times and subtle uses of barrique. Creating wines from legendary vineyards, such as Arborina, Larigi and Brunate, each wine and vintage is unique and pure. Since the original vintages, these wines have acquired pure cult status. Simply amazing and very limited!

2009 Barolo Ceretta

$150.00

Very limited. Please inquire!

"The 2009 Barolo Cerretta is not a Riserva, but it is released six years after the harvest. Fruit comes from a 4,000-square-meter parcel near the Bricco Cerretta hamlet in Serralunga d'Alba that is shaped like a little mound with excellent exposures on its various sides. This wine shows an excellent sense of balance with beautiful freshness and aromatic intensity that still feels youthful and vibrant. It offers seamless endnotes of wild berry, balsam herb and toasted almond. This wine will hold strong for many more years to come." Monica Larner, 97 points

"Dark shades of black cherries, plums, menthol, spices and tar explode from the 2009 Barolo Vigna Bricco Cerretta. This rich, sumptuous wine is endowed with serious depth and power. The 2009 is years away from drinking at it speak, but it is striking, even today. Layers of huge fruit supported by equally imposing tannins wrap around the plush, powerful finish. The Cerretta is another wine with a bright future." Antonio Galloni, 95 points

2011 Barolo Arborina

$120.00

Just released

"The 2011 Barolo Arborina is a fantastic expression that boasts a seamless fusion of dark fruit and spice. It delivers character, power and a feminine side that comes forward thanks to pretty floral definition. Pressed violets and roses rise from the glass. Elio Altare makes his wines on the verge of reduction (meaning with minimal contact with oxygen) as a way of safeguarding the aromatic intensity. In the mouth, the wine awards fine tannins and silky, long persistency."

2011 Barolo Brunate

$

Coming soon. Highly allocated and rare.

"Sadly, the 2011 Barolo Brunate represents the last time this wine will be released. The Altare family lost its lease on this historic vineyard. In fact, this is the only year Altare will release a full range of wines including those being phased out and those being newly introduced. Elegance and grace are the main themes here, but you also get a pretty embroidery of violets, toasted almond and balsam herb. Elio and Silvia Altare tell me they are heartbroken to see this important part of their portfolio disappear. We all are."
